We recognize that sometimes leadership isn't practiced well in Christian spaces, so we've spent a lot of time thinking about how to build a healthy leadership culture. We center our leadership culture around four values:
1. Servant Leadership
We strive to have a leadership structure that models Jesus’ teachings on the upside-down kingdom: “The greatest among you will be your servant. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted” (Matthew 23:11-12). Therefore, we don’t view our leaders as people who lord their authority over others, but as people who serve, support, and equip the church to do all it was meant to do.
2. Shared Leadership
Since no one person has all the spiritual gifts, we don’t believe in the idea of a solo leader. We believe in a shared leadership model, where various leaders are called to serve in distinct ways that are in accordance with their gifts and callings.
3. Accountable Leadership
We believe that it is important for our leaders to have the structures they need to provide them with both advocacy and accountability. Every pastor has what we call a ministerial relations team, a group of members from Grace Life Church who regularly meet with that pastor to provide support and guidance.
4. Diverse Leadership
We understand that God has designed us all differently, and there is strength when different types of people work together. Therefore, we strive to ensure that a diversity of backgrounds and opinions are represented in leadership. Additionally, we fully affirm women in all leadership levels in the church, including pastoral leadership.
